Welcome to AWELU
AWELU (Academic Writing in English at Lund University) is an LU-funded project running 2009-2010. The project is developing this web-based platform, which aims to be a self-instructive resource covering various needs faced by staff and students at LU, in connection with writing in English. As an addition, resources and material developed by the English Translation Group will be made available on the AWELU platform (templates, an English LU word list, etc.).
The AWELU Team
The AWELU platform is currently being developed by staff from the English Unit and the IT Unit within the Faculties of Humanities and Theology at Lund University. Project leader is Pro-Dean Fredrik Lindström. During the spring of 2010, the writing team consists of Fabian Beijer, Henrik Gyllstad, Mats Johansson, and Cecilia Wadsö Lecaros. The IT team consists of Marcus Lecaros (design and layout), Tomas Schönthal (search engine programming) and Rikard Stymne (web programming).
The AWELU Platform
The AWELU platform aims to present the content in a way that facilitates accessibility to all the resources that are offered. There are eight sections, each being represented in a different colour, covering the field of Academic Writing in English at Lund University. By moving the mouse pointer over a coloured section in the top menu, the subsections of that section will be displayed. Once a subsection has been selected, a list of the section contents will appear in the left menu.
The AWELU Search Engine
The AWELU search engine is highly interactive in order to increase the user-friendliness of the resource platform. The search results, which are generated as soon as something is typed into the search box, are based on a number of parallel search strategies (for instance, full text searches, searches based on text types and on the relation between texts). The AWELU search function presents the results of these parallel search strategies simultaneously in a number of boxes (Keyword, Subject, Text, Advice, Definition, Example, Further Reading, Document). By applying a Viewpoint technique, AWELU’s search engine allows users to not only search for a specific keyword – as a typical search engine would – but also to explore the entire platform through cross-related search results.
Work in Progress
AWELU is a work in progress, and naturally, the project group is grateful for feedback. Parts of the platform material will therefore be tested on different user groups, starting with a group of students from the LU School of Economics and Management during the autumn of 2009 and other student groups and the project reference group in the spring of 2010.

A Note on the Text
In all texts written for the platform, British English is being used, and the reference style chosen is APA.
