Spelling correctly is an important part of literacy and English spelling can cause difficulties for both the native and non-native speaker of English. On a positive note, technology has provided us with a spelling tool in our computers, which is handy when engaged in the writing process; however, remember that the spell check is not 100% accurate, as it will accept all English words, whether they are the correct ones or not.

For instance, the spell check will accept both words in the following pairs, since it is insensitive to context: whether/weather; write/right; hear/here.

Generally speaking, the main tool at our disposal when it comes to finding the right word and its correct spelling is the dictionary, whether it be a printed book, or an on-line version of the same book. Please go to the Dictionary section on this platform to learn all you need to know about dictionaries and find links to useful on-line resources, including corpora.
